LEWISBURG, Pa. (MMD Newswire) December 16, 2009 -- The 100 Most Beautiful Words in the English Language by linguist Robert Beard examines the origins and uniqueness of English words by looking closely at what the author considers the 100 loveliest.
The book begins with an essay on what makes words beautiful and a background essay on the relationships between European and American Indian languages. The essays contained within the book examine the pronunciation, usage and history of words like cynosure, desultory, ephemeral, gambol, petrichor, serendipity, and Susquehanna. In one chapter the author states, "Words like becoming, wherewithal, erstwhile, and fetching bring along with them a sense of simpler, more comfortable times past. They carry that warm sense of security and ease we get from things that belong to us."
Beard also includes facts about words now used in the English language. In one chapter the author writes, "Well over 50 percent of the English vocabulary is borrowed from French alone."
The book aims to help readers, particularly students, teachers and overall word lovers, find and create even more beautiful words.
