Karen A. Barta, MS, CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist and owner of Colorado Speech Therapy Services in Centennial, Colorado, emails Handy Handouts to parents and hands them out during visits. "...[T]he handouts have good suggestions for families to implement at home," Barta said, "in addition to providing easy-to-understand information about problems family members might be having."

On the new website, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), special educators, resource specialists, teachers, occupational therapists (OTs), and parents can browse 18 topics and read over 230 handouts. Almost all of the informational supplements are researched and written by master's-level SLPs, special educators, and OTs, on topics that range from autism to learning disabilities to speech and language therapy.
There's one section geared specifically toward parents, with over 100 handouts written in parent-friendly language to help them become more knowledgeable about their children's needs. Parents can finds answers to questions like, "What is a speech-language pathologist?" and "I think my child has autism-what do I do?" as well as information on how to meet their children's educational and developmental needs at home.
"I absolutely love the Handy Handouts," said Stephanie Castleman-Argue of Williamsburg, VA, whose son has expressive and receptive speech delays as well as a sensory processing disorder. "As a parent advocate, I am always looking for ways to educate my son's teachers as well as assist other parents of children with disabilities."
Handy Handouts began in 2000, after Super Duper owners, Sharon and Thomas Webber, received numerous questions from SLPs and parents about everyday educational occurrences. Since then, Super Duper has offered the free handouts on its website, www.superduperinc.com. But this past month the Webbers decided to launch a new website dedicated to just Handy Handouts. "We wanted to introduce the newsletters to a larger audience of teachers and parents, and to make it very easy for them to access the information in the handouts," said Thomas Webber. "Having a website dedicated solely to Handy Handouts seemed the best way to do this."
The handouts are easily accessible on the website, www.handyhandouts.com, and are available for printing and sharing. The only rule regarding their use is that the handouts must be reproduced "as is" and must not be sold or combined with any other commercial materials.
Super Duper publishes a new Handy Handout every week. Many of the handouts are also available in Spanish.
